“I had a mission, which was to disseminate spiritual wisdom. Very clear to me that that's what I wanted to do. That was the first bottom line, staying true to that mission, which meant publishing things that had depth and real value and that would deliver actual transformation for people. The second bottom line was something that we've come to call, sounds true, our relationship bottom line. Sometimes in the past I called it our groovy workplace, but it was the idea of how we treat each other, how much we enjoy our life, how we build relationships with our authors and our customers. And to me, those relationships expand. They include the earth and the future, people who aren't even born yet, that this relationship bottom line is also something that we perform towards. And both of these bottom lines, are we being true to our mission, true to the integrity of our relationships, are non-negotiable. (06:22 in this cast)

Tami Simon is the founder of Sounds True. She launched the company at just 22 years old with a tape recorder, a $50,000 inheritance, and a vision to disseminate spiritual wisdom. She has grown Sounds True into the preeminent multimedia publisher of transformative teachings with over 6,000 titles and two appearances on the Inc. 500 list. She has built what can only be called a spiritual empire all without ever compromising her deepest values.

In this conversation we talked about how she maintains unwavering integrity while scaling a business over 40 years. Tami's journey offers a masterclass in conscious business building, showing that staying true to your values may just be the secret to sustainable success.

  • Anyone in the spiritual or wellness space needing a roadmap for sustainable empire building

  • Leaders tired of choosing between profit and purpose

  • Conscious entrepreneurs looking for 40 years of real-world proof that integrity works

Ideas that really stuck out to me:

  1. The accidental empire approach works. Tami never set out to build a business. She thought she was becoming a modern monk. For five years she didn't even realize she was in business until a newspaper put her story in the business section instead of arts and culture. This beginner's mind allowed her to create something authentic rather than copying existing models.

  2. Three bottom lines create an unshakeable foundation. Tami operates with three core principles. The first is mission integrity which is staying true to spiritual wisdom. The second is relationship integrity it is how you treat everyone. The third is financial results. The first two are never negotiable while the financial bottom line has flexibility. This framework prevents the slow erosion of values that kills most growing companies.

  3. Your body is your best business advisor: Tami uses what she calls her "barf meter". It is literal nausea when deals or opportunities don't align with her values. Trusting somatic intelligence helped her avoid countless compromises that could have derailed her empire while appearing profitable on paper.

  4. Clarity beats niceness in conscious leadership. Drawing from her interview with former Danone CEO Lorna Davis, she learned that clarity and not people-pleasing is the most important conscious leadership skill. Being direct about boundaries and disagreements creates healthier relationships than trying to keep everyone comfortable.

  5. Integration creates innovation. Instead of compartmentalizing business and spirituality, Tami treats her entire company as a 40-year spiritual practice. Every challenge becomes personal development. Every decision gets filtered through values, and every interaction becomes conscious communication practice.

  6. The "right altar" test filters everything. Before major decisions, she asks if they're serving their sacred purpose. Something they'd sacrifice for. When you have a clear altar you attract aligned team members and customers while repelling those who would compromise your mission.

  7. Pioneer consciousness over comparison. Rather than measuring herself against traditional business metrics, Tami focuses on creating the future of conscious commerce. She realized that conventional success often leads to heart failure in your sixties that hardly a sustainable model for empire building.

While most entrepreneurs sacrifice pieces of themselves for growth, Tami's proven that integrating your whole being actually accelerates sustainable success. Her "monk mindset" became her competitive advantage.

Her journey offers irrefutable evidence that you can build a last business without selling your soul. Her unwavering commitment has blossomed into a transformational empire reaching millions of seekers worldwide, providing meaningful livelihoods for hundreds of dedicated employees, and serving as undeniable proof that the future belongs to visionary leaders courageous enough to build authentic businesses from the heart.

Hope you enjoy this conversation!
