“In reality, energy has to do with our entire wellbeing. So our emotional self, our mental self, our spiritual self, and our physical self. And we can't look at energy just as physical. So if you look at it not just as physical, where are you being drained or leaking energy when it comes to your emotions? So I explain this to people, like consider where you are really low vibe at times. Like what brings you to that level? What brings you to a level of guilt and shame and jealousy and envy and those kinds of things? You know, and some people might say, it's social media or they might say like, it's my mom or like, you know, a certain friend or whatever. And it's like, okay, well take stock of that because you need to understand when you're leaking energy. It's like putting on your oxygen mask before, you know, helping the person next to you.” (11:25 in this cast)
Erin Coupe is a human development expert, keynote speaker, and author of I Can Fit That In who helps high achievers break free from the productivity trap and reclaim their energy.
In this conversation, we dive deep into the invisible energy leaks that are draining your life force every single day without you even realizing it. She started questioning why we believe we have to grind until 65 before we're allowed to actually live our lives. She works with Fortune 500 companies while openly discussing consciousness, energy, and what it actually means to steward your life force.

Ideas that really stuck out to me:
Your daily glass of wine is an energy leak disguised as self-care. When Erin was in corporate, she'd pour wine at 5:30pm every day thinking she was unwinding. After years of inner work, she realized it was actually an escape from her own mind. When you need something every single day to take the edge off, you're not relaxing, you're avoiding. And that avoidance is costing you more energy than you realize.
Resentment is a flashing warning light that your energy is hemorrhaging somewhere. Erin felt resentment toward motherhood, her husband, colleagues, and clients. It was unconscious patterns bleeding energy into her conscious world.
Busyness is the socially acceptable energy vampire. Broadcasting how busy and needed you are isn't impressive — it's broadcasting that you've abandoned yourself. When you have no time in your calendar for yourself you're not succeeding but instead you're drowning.
Every compulsive behavior is an energy leak you can't see. Pulling out your phone in an elevator, scrolling when bored, and running to the bathroom when conversations lull. These aren't random actions but rather they're your system trying to soothe discomfort. And that constant soothing is exhausting you at a level you don't consciously register.
Energy leadership is about holistic stewardship across four dimensions. The emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical. Most people only think about physical energy but you're leaking energy emotionally through low-vibe relationships, mentally through negative thought loops, and spiritually through disconnection from purpose. Understanding these dimensions is like finally seeing where all your money has been going after months of wondering why you're broke.
Low-vibe relationships drain you at the subconscious level. Some people leave you feeling depleted every single time. You might not consciously register it but your energy system does. Erin recently discovered family members had unfollowed her on Instagram. Her first reaction was to question if she was hurt then she realized they were actually draining her field, and their removal was a gift not a rejection.
Your thoughts and beliefs are software that needs updating. Just like you eagerly update your phone when prompted, you need to actively update the programming in your mind. The limiting beliefs running in the background of your consciousness won't disappear on their own. You have to consciously identify what no longer serves you and replace it with what does.
Shadow material you're avoiding is actively draining your battery. The parts of yourself you're trying to shine or shove down don't disappear. They sit in your subconscious requiring constant energy to keep suppressed. What you resist persists, and that resistance is exhausting. When Erin was writing her book, she had ugly crying sessions confronting childhood material she didn't want to face. But that was her healing journey, and once she stopped suppressing it, she got that energy back.
The biggest energy leak is fighting against reality. Erin works more hours now than in her corporate job but it doesn't drain her because she's not fighting it. Every moment you resist what is you're burning fuel. When you're present with what you're doing and you've consciously chosen your path rather than feeling obligated to it, the quality of the experience fundamentally transforms.
Mindless scrolling on social media, overworking to tell our minds that we are busy, drinking wine to unwind, avoiding silence and some little things we do everyday aren't random. They're your consciousness trying to soothe discomfort.
Once you start seeing these patterns you can work with them. Not by white-knuckling and forcing yourself to stop but by addressing what's underneath.
That's when real change happens.
Hope you enjoy this conversation!
