“ It's all spiritual. Consciousness is the thing knowing the physical experience. Consciousness is the thing knowing the much higher astral experiences. Consciousness is always the thing knowing all the things. That alertness is a move back towards the thing that is real. The thing that is real is consciousness itself. And if we look carefully and if we look honestly, we will see what is happening in consciousness. A physical experience, Sensory data, thoughts, emotions, relationships, pains in the body, that's happening. So this is about alertness. And as we move with alertness, we both see the physical very deeply and experience it very deeply.” (01:02:28 in this cast)
Christian Sundberg is the author of A Walk in the Physical and a meditation teacher whose pre-birth memories have given him a unique perspective on the nature of consciousness, why we choose challenging experiences, and what this reveals about the fundamental nature of reality itself.
I wanted to have Christian on the show because his perspective bridges three things rarely discussed together with this level of clarity such as the actual mechanics of pre-birth planning, how life plans function within a probabilistic reality, and what our pre-physical memories reveal about the true nature of existence.
This episode is sponsored by my book Conscious Accomplishment - How to Use Personal Achievement for Spiritual Growth.

Spiritual seekers who want to bridge esoteric concepts with practical living
People going through prolonged health challenges or chronic pain who are struggling to find meaning in their suffering
Those struggling with self-judgment or feeling like they're "failing" at life or spirituality
Anyone interested in the mechanics of reincarnation, karma, and soul evolution beyond surface-level spiritual clichés
Ideas that really stuck out to me:
We exist as consciousness long before we take on physical form. Christian’s pre-birth memory of encountering a being who had lived with chronic pain reveals that our essential nature exists independently of any body. The way this being chose to meet his pain created what's described as a refinement of his essence and nature.
Life planning involves a sophisticated matching system between your intentions and available incarnations. Rather than designing a custom life from scratch, guides access what sounds like a database of available lives and match your specific intentions with an optimal life packet. This suggests incarnation is precise alignment not random chance or punishment.
The veil of forgetting is a carefully calibrated tool that makes physical experience possible. When Christian accepted the veil for his previous lifetime, he describes it as a jarring drop in vibration like turning down an amplifier knob until consciousness feels completely separated from everything. This forgetting and apparent disconnection creates a unique state of consciousness specific to the physical experience. More evolved beings often choose denser veils and harder lives precisely because they're capable of meeting those challenges.
Earth functions like a high-contrast weight room for consciousness. The physical realm is incredibly dense and limiting but that's exactly what makes it valuable for accelerated evolution. Even being given the chance to play a human is like winning the lottery.
Reality is probabilistic and responds to consciousness not deterministic like it appears. As consciousness evolves, you change how you perceive limitations and the actual form itself can shift because physical reality actualizes probabilistically. These synchronicities aren't manipulations but natural consequences of reality's structure responding to consciousness.
Chronic challenges aren't random suffering but doorways to integrating specific patterns you came here to work through. Christian's heat stroke at 22 led to the exact fear he had identified pre-birth which is being powerless to escape agony. He describes finding the root fear like touching the back wall of a huge cavern but life continues to hand him pieces of that volume to process.
One genuine moment of love can justify an entire lifetime because quality matters infinitely more than scope. Christian shares a near-death account where a single moment of unconditional love had ripple effects so profound it made the whole incarnation worthwhile. That moment you told your mom you love her and really felt it might be the entire point.
Christian describes the physical realm as incredibly dense and limiting compared to higher states. Being a biological human is a very constraining, tight, limited, dense type of experience.
But that's precisely the point. It's like lifting weights on a weight bench. If you lift heavy weight, you can grow stronger much more quickly.
The density creates contrast. The limitations create pressure. And under that pressure, when consciousness chooses love over fear, there's massive leverage. You're not just choosing love in easy conditions. You're choosing it while carrying enormous weight.
Most of the time, we experience it as difficulty. The question is how will you use it?
I hope you find Christian's perspective as illuminating as I did.
