“I like to say you have to create the stage to be spoken to. And what I mean is spoken to by, call it your highest self, like your parts of your wisdom and mind that are like the wisest, or you could look at it like the universe itself, or you could look at even just like divinity, like the things that are unseen, these greater energies that exist. And they're speaking to us.” (06:16 in this cast)
East Forest is a musician, sound healer, and creative guide whose work sits at the intersection of music, ceremony, and consciousness exploration. His albums like Music For Mushrooms have become soundtracks for psychedelic journeys and meditation practices around the world.
In this conversation, we explore the practical and mystical dimensions of channeling creativity and receiving guidance from something beyond ourselves. He shares how he approaches music as a vessel, how to create the conditions for inspiration to flow through, and what it means to do one thing at a time in a world designed to fracture your attention.
This episode is sponsored by my book Conscious Accomplishment - How to Use Personal Achievement for Spiritual Growth.

This episode is great for:
Artists, musicians, writers, or anyone who battles showing up to do their most meaningful work
Those trying to live authentically in the modern world without becoming a hermit, navigating the tension between contribution and inner work
People exploring or considering psychedelic experiences who want to understand the role of music in guiding these journeys
People who want accessible, non-woo-woo ways to connect with their inner wisdom and create space for the sacred in daily life
Ideas that really stuck out to me:
The creative process is fundamentally about channeling, not producing. All art comes from somewhere beyond us. Some call this the muse, the universe, or consciousness itself. Our job is to show up, do the labor, and create the conditions for inspiration to flow through. This shifts the entire relationship from "I'm making something" to "something wants to come through me."
Create the stage to be spoken to. Divine guidance is always available but you must actively create openings to receive it. You can do this carving out sacred time before your phone, before emails, before the day rushes in. Ask "What wants to come through today?" and listen. This is how East Forest starts every morning with music.
Do one thing at a time. When you're truly listening to music, you're automatically in the present moment. When you're walking and actually noticing what you see, the channel clears. Single tasking is the practice. Every time you bring yourself back to just this one thing, you're strengthening your capacity to receive inspiration.
Accept the resistance and show up anyway. Every morning the resistance will be there. The dopamine hits from your phone will feel easier than the vulnerability of creative work. Don't wait to feel motivated. Create a non-negotiable practice so simple you can do it even when you don't want to. The showing up is what matters.
Protect your nervous system from information sickness. The average person spends seven hours a day on their phone. This fractures your consciousness and you cannot receive guidance in this state. Conside deleting social media apps. Don't check your phone for the first hour after waking. Create real boundaries or you'll lose access to the signal entirely.
Focus on the labor, not the fruits. You're responsible for showing up and creating the stage. But what comes through isn't yours to control. This distinction liberates you. Stop judging sessions as good or bad based on results. Just show up. Over time, your sensitivity to the signal increases even on days when nothing obvious comes.
Music is one of humanity's most underutilized healing technologies. We've known for millennia that sound can guide consciousness, heal trauma, and facilitate transformation. Modern science is starting to validate this with studies showing low frequency pulses clearing Alzheimer's plaques and artistic practice extending longevity.
Ask the question directly. When you need guidance, stop trying to figure it out with your mind. Get quiet and ask: "What do I need to know?" Then write down whatever comes without judging it. East Forest does this in his music practice. I do it when I wake up in the middle of the night. The question itself is an invitation that creates the opening.
Follow the whispers immediately. Divine guidance doesn't shout over chaos. It whispers in stillness. When you get a subtle impulse to call someone, take a walk, or start a project, follow it. Even when it doesn't make logical sense. This trains you to recognize and trust the signal.
Make it as non-negotiable as brushing your teeth. East Forest treats his morning music practice like going to the gym. It's not about feeling inspired. It's calisthenics for your creative channel. Pick your practice and commit to it. The consistency matters more than perfection. This is how you build the muscle to receive.
The concept East Forest shared that really landed for me was,“We have to create the stage to be spoken to."
Wisdom is always available. Your highest self, the universe, divinity, whatever you want to call it, is constantly offering guidance. But we have to actually create the conditions to receive it.
It's like having a thousand small knocks on your door drowning out the one quiet presence standing patiently in the background saying, "Hey, I'm here whenever you're ready."
You have to actually create the opening. You have to hit pause on the doing. You have to risk the vulnerability of not knowing and just being present with what is.
Music can be a powerful tool for this. When you're truly listening to a piece of music with your full attention, you're inherently in the present moment. You're feeling. You're experiencing. The monkey mind quiets down and something deeper can emerge.
This is what makes East Forest's work so special. It's designed specifically to create this opening. Whether you're on a psychedelic journey or simply sitting in meditation, his music holds space for that dialogue between you and something greater.
Hope you enjoy this conversation!
